Using SMB in OS X

SMB is a method for allowing Mac OS X users to connect to Windows files servers.  You can create aliases on your desktop to your network folders to provide ready access.

In the Finder, press Command-K or select the Go menu and choose Connect to Server... Connect to Server Menu

Depending on whether you want to access your home folder or your department folder you'll need to type in the corresponding URL into the Address field of the Connect to Server window.
Capitalization is important.

To connect to your home Folder:

  • Type:
    smb://bsp-nas.its.bethel.edu/Home*/username/ and choose Connect.
  • Note: * is the capitalized first letter of your username and username is your username
  • For example: smb://bsp-nas.its.bethel.edu/HomeP/psmith
To connect to department folders:
  • Type:
    smb://bsp-nas.its.bethel.edu/Departments/yourDept/ and then choose Connect
  • Note: yourDept is the CARS department name of your department
  • For example:
    smb://bsp-nas.its.bethel.edu/Departments/CASNursing
Connect to Server Window

In the next window enter your username and password and choose OK. Login window

Your home directory will appear as a volume on your Desktop like any other removable drive, and can be managed and ejected in the same way. Mounted volume

If this is your machine, you may want to make an alias for faster access in the future. To do so, hold Command (also known as Open Apple) and Option keys, and drag the volume to where you would like the alias to appear. To access bsp-nas in the future, open the alias and enter your username and password. Alias to volume
